Just having fun drawing here. It wasn’t until the colors that I confirmed that it was mask.
Fab Friday 009: Star Man
I was feeling very nostalgic this week. Star Man from NES Pro Wrestling was one of the first times I can remember being totally captivated by character design. Spending some time drawing in that headspace this week was a beneficial exercise for things moving forward. Not so much for this piece. Just in a reflective way for my own evolutionary process. This character transcended the game and made me think about bigger things. I’m not sure if I will draw The Amazon but it’s tempting. Below you can see the steps from ink drawing, to black and white and then color. I wanted to have the bars running through the center of the design to add the idea of a horizon line and ropes for the wrestling ring. They probably don’t need to be there from an editorial perspective but I dig it.
Fab Friday 008: Above The Clouds
I liked the eyes breaking the border so much last week that I did it again. Not much direction was given for this one. Just exercise and practice for a four color print on white paper. I took the freeform drawing pictured below next to the black and white key line and just started tinkering. I have a few older pieces that aren’t being used for anything so I added the spaceman and cat.

Fab Friday 007: Right Handed
There is a lot of weirdness to consider here but it seems like a nice day.
Sometimes you have to let a background breathe.
Now On Threadless: Burger Ghost
Fab Friday 006: DOOM
After a trip to the comic shop this week, I wanted to make some Dr Doom fan art. I picked up One World Under Doom but haven’t jumped in just yet. I had to track down the first issue which will be here Monday. Can’t wait.
Fab Friday 005: Yelena
It’s not too often I end up doing a portrait but after seeing Thunderbolts a couple of times, I wanted to create some fan art. There wasn’t time to create something for each member of the team so I chose Yelena. Her willingness to enter the void just gets me every time. Absolutely love this movie.
Unrelated- Truckin Ghost is now available in the Threadless Shop.
Wizard's Council and Cloud Fellow are now on Threadless
Another Friday, another update. The Wizard’s Council and today’s Fab Friday titled Cloud Fellow are now available on multiple items in the Threadless shop.
Fab Friday 004: Cloud Fellow
Happy May The 4th
Today we’re spoofing the classic Ralph Wiggum I’m a Star Wars line to have a little fun.
It’s like a valentine but a couple of months too late and for the wrong date.
Happy Star Wars Day.
Fab Friday 003: Charged
Three weeks in to Fab Friday and the train is rolling right along.
Today’s offering is titled: Charged
Once I started to apply colors I edited the eyes to be open to help balance out the teeth popping on the image. You can see the original ink drawing below to see the eyes before the change. This one started out as a simple drawing of a scream but as it evolved it took on a few names and meanings. I’m not really done sitting with this one and I think as time goes on, my relationship with it will only grow. It’s classic for me and it also feels fresh. Dig it. Thanks for checking it out.
Now On Threadless: Blue Ghost
The Blue Ghost has been a fan favorite since its debut in 2015. We’re happy to finally offer a selection of goods so we can keep rocking one of our favs. Click here if you’d like to visit ol’Blue in the Threadless shop.

Fab Friday 002: Shocker
Are the eyes caged or is there something else going on?
What can you see or not see to get you charged?
Welcome to week two of Fab Friday.
Fab Friday 001: Oracle
It is Friday. We did it! Welcome to FAB FRIDAY!
This weekend marks the ten year anniversary of the collectors group. In those ten years we’ve all gotten quite comfortable with our expectations so I wanted to switch things up. Usually I would post some inked illustrations in the late morning and as those build over time we all would get a sense of what new merch would be coming. I want to keep that tradition going but with a new presentation. Having colored work at the ready opens up a lot of new options. In the few weeks it takes to get a new screened print I could have a few Fab Fridays posted. Moving forward, the sky is the limit. Let’s see where we end up.
This Friday we kick things off with a new piece titled: Oracle. I wanted to set out and make something that was a blend of psychedelic horror vibes. Something that is comfortable and familiar but felt fresh. I could see prints of this happening down the line but right now there are no plans. Just Fab Friday. Welcome to it.
Cherry Moth Cake is now on THREADLESS
Hello everyone!
I’ve ditched the old Teepublic shop and started a Threadless store. The launch of the Teepublic store fell flat for me when the first batch of orders were hit or miss. They were usually prompt with their service in replacing damages and misprints but I am hoping to avoid that all together. It has been a few years now and the distain I had for that launch never really went away. Sure accidents happen but I would be often reminded of things online. If it is happening to me, it is a good chance it is happening to others. Sales had been stale for a long while too. It was time.
I have ordered a few samples from Threadless this month and I do prefer the product to Teepublic. We’re excited for a fresh start on apparel. New design options will be updated each week for the foreseeable future. Plus with the arrival of Fab Friday here on our main website, it is nice to have some fresh art in the mix.
This week we are launching with a classic like Brutus and a new Moth Commander logo design. There are many styles of shirts to choose from. May we all find comfort in our preferences. Click here to check out the shop.
Fab Friday Begins April 18th!
I am pleased to announce the debut of Fab Friday!
So what is going on?
Each Friday I will be sharing new art with you. It will not be the the raw ink work that we are all familiar with through social media posts. Instead I am taking the inspiration that fuels those moments and spending a week with them. Adding things like texture, depth and color to see where the extra time takes things. I have done a few Fab Friday pieces to share already and I am keep a notebook for future ideas. Some are simpler than others. Some designs take longer so they build on the side. It has been a great exploration so far.
Maybe we’ll make a book down the road. Who knows? I mean, I tinkered with just the image for this post on and off for three weeks. I need to put it SOMEWHERE!
Things kick off April 18th. See you then.
Nick
